Beals Island Maine - Model Boat Show - ExploreNewEngland.com
Beals Island Maine - Model Boat Show - ExploreNewEngland.com: "Lobsterman Brian Smith, 40, whose home is on adjacent Great Wass Island, is one of many residents who have taken toy boat building to an entirely new level over the years. In the winter, on days when it's too cold or stormy to fish, Smith spends his time constructing intricate models of fishing boats in his woodworking shop, housed in a modified plastic greenhouse in front of his blue single-story home overlooking Alley's Bay. He's built half a dozen so far, measuring up to 52 inches long.
''If I'd been born 50 years ago, I'd have been a boat builder,' said Smith, a descendant of island settler Mainwaring Beal Jr.
Smith spent much of his childhood watching fishing boats being built in local shops. The old-time wooden-boat builders and their distinctive designs and construction methods made a big impression. ''I get the lines out of my head. It's all by eye,' he said of his model work."

The design of the Beals Island-model or Jonesport-model lobster boat originated here and its impact on today's Maine lobster fleet is recognized the length of the coast."

Marine Modelers of New England is a low-key club based in the greater Boston area. The thirty year old organization meets monthly, usually pond-side to sail their model boats, when the weather allows it. Their meetings are informal, with little time spent on business, and lots of time displaying models, talking about RC boats, and listening to guest speakers. There is usually an interesting array of models at our gatherings displayed by members and guests.

Star45 construction:winch and steering servo | Radio Tray

From: "J Fisher"

The radio tray is to hold the winch and steering servo. No provisions for water proofing. When sailing is fresh water I tape the receiver under the deck and everything else is open. The boats tend to be a little wet due to the low freeboard, but as long as I drain between races I have no issues. For salt water I am thinking of adding one of the radio pots from bantock. I would only put my receiver and batteries in that, everything else is open.
